Cafe Visit: Frisky Goat Bakery & Cafe

A bright entrance to an early morning brunch, Frisky Goat Bakery & Café is located along the hectic roads of TTDI. It took me an astonishing 15 minutes to find parking to finally relax at the café. Once inside, you’re greeted by the friendly staff, owner Angeline Yap, and various eye-catching decorations. At the back of the café, you can have a glimpse through their bakery.
Being here early in the afternoon, I get to enjoy a peaceful brunch (because the cafe is usually packed)
Frisk Goat's Bakery portion can been seen through the blue windows (left)
One of the main highlights in this café is the freshly baked pastries and savories that are displayed at the front counter. Frisky Goat’s cakes are also freshly baked with specials that change often.

When I arrived at the café, I received many notifications and good reviews about the lunch and dinner main courses. However, because I was there for brunch, I was not able to try any main courses (but I’ll be sure to come back to try).
A grand total of RM 68.9 for this

For my brunch, I ordered (top right to bottom left) a Fruity Danish [RM 6.5], Blueberry Danish [RM 6.5], “The Works” Breakfast [RM 24], Belgium Waffles [RM 13.9], Latte [RM 9], and Hot Chocolate [RM 9].

Let’s start with “The Works” Breakfast – A complete breakfast meal composed of one Sunny-side (not visible), beef sausage, beef bacon, sautéed mushrooms, roasted cherry tomatoes, side salad and toast. The only flaw in this breakfast meal was the bread was not toasted.

Frisky Goat's coffees are not as stellar as dedicated coffee specialists or cafes, but that should not deter you from coming to pair the food with coffee. The Hot Chocolate, on the other hand, was very rich.

Waffle lovers will definitely enjoy the crispy bites of the Belgium Waffles and Waffles A L'Americaine! If you prefer a savory waffle for brunch, the Waffles A L'Americaine will definitely please you. For a sweeter side, the Belgium Waffles will definitely savor your taste-buds.

Overall, Frisky Goat has been a eye-opening experience to me. Their selection of breakfast food definitely amazes me and I will definitely come back to try their dinner selections (as many other blogs suggest).

Cafe Visit: Brewmen

"Coffee! You Can Sleep When You're Dead!"
My third visit in under two weeks. Brewmen is a stunning, easy-going café located in Solaris Mont Kiara. What incites me to keep returning back to this café is not the extraordinarily diverse coffee, but the creative ways of drinking their specialty coffees.
The platitudinous wall of Brewmen
Brewmen’s interior is very much rustic with many unique wooden details and cardboard signs. An eye-opener to this café is the many bicycle hangers set-up for cyclists who frequent the place. (Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any cyclists utilize this cool aspect of the café.) A beehive-shaped rack, colorful coffee pictures and coffee bags make this café a must visit for instagrammers and hipsters.
The rustic wooden atmosphere of Brewmen
Personally, when I’m in Brewmen, I try to stay away from the traditional, mundane coffee that they offer (such as Lattes or Long Blacks). Instead, I tend to order from their “seasonal” menu. This includes some of their popular drinks like Reverse Lattes, Espresso Bombs, and Katy Perry. Now, you may start wondering, “What is he on about?”
(Top, Left to Right) Latte [RM 10], Katy Perry [RM 15], Cold Brew [RM 12] (Bottom, Left to Right) Red Affrogato [RM 12], Reverse Latte [RM 18]
Katy Perry: A hot chocolate drink with an ice-cold milk bottom - Patrons can either drink it without mixing (this becomes more of a hot chocolate drink) or mix it up (turning the drink into a more milkshake-like drink).

Reverse Espresso / Latte: This is more of a slow drink for patrons who want to relax at Brewmens. You get to control how concentrated the coffee is by adding milk (for latte) / water (for espresso) to a frozen espresso ball (four shots).

Espresso Bomb: This is more of a fast drink. Much like a Jägerbomb, a shot of espresso is placed inside a cup full of cold milk. As you drink this, the espresso will infuse with the milk in the mouth creating a sensual feeling in the mouth.

Cold Brew: The Cold Brew made in Brewmen has a lighter feel, with a mix of sweetness and low-acidity. Made using El Salvador beans, this drink is very refreshing especially on hot days.

Red Affogato: Basically this is an Affogato but instead of espresso, Brewmen replaces it with Rooibos tea. Brewmen also serves normal Affogatos.
If you're not sure what to order, ask the baristas! They're very friendly! (Click to enlarge their "seasonal drinks")
Besides their creative coffee, Brewmen also serves savories. These include sandwiches, brownies and Waffles! (There are other items too, I just forgot! Will update the next time I visit.)
(Top, Left to Right) Philly Steak Sandwich [RM 11.9], Chicken Teriyaki Sandwich [RM 11.9] (Bottom, Left to Right) Waffles with Butter and Honey [RM 9], Brownie [RM9] [with Ice Cream RM12]
Personally, I felt that the Philly Steak Sandwich was the better of the two sandwiches that Brewmen served. The Chicken Teriyaki was not as appetizing and felt very dry. Sandwiches are served with Tomato flavored chips.

Brewmen’s brownies are more cake-y than fudgy; they are warmed up when ordered. Personally, eating their brownies without ice-cream, would make you very full. On the other hand, Brewmen’s waffles are crispy and savory. Despite waiting a long time for the waffles, it was still worth it.

Overall, I feel that Brewmen was definitely one of the best cafés around Solaris Mont Kiara (and there are many cafés around Solaris). The low-key café is sure to pick up a lot more customers with its welcoming staff.

Cafe Visit: PULP By Papa Palheta

© Nick Wong
Opened in April, 2014, PULP by Papa Palheta has already intrigued many coffee enthusiasts and non-coffee enthusiasts. Located at an old printing factory next to the New Straits Times Press building, PULP is easily one of Bangsar’s hidden gems.

Because the city deserves great coffee. (PULP by  Papa Palheta)
The concept of PULP follow’s Papa Palheta’s Singaporean coffee boutique, Chye Seng Huat (an old hardware store). Inside the establishment, PULP retains vintage memories with a paper-cutting machine turned counter-table with stools. A simple, minimalistic wooden interior greets you inside with a modern twist of coffee machines and accessories.

While PULP is definitely a hangout place for coffee enthusiasts, lovers and hipsters, it offers itself to be a sales and service center for its many machines, tools and accessories. Furthermore, it can also be a place for professional training and workshops.

PULP's Hardworking, Friendly Staff
Overall, my experience at PULP was great. Amongst the coffee sold, there are also a variety of pies and cakes available. I had the Carrot Cake and Mushroom Pie with a Cold Brew (Ethiopian Suke Quto) and a Hot Chocolate. Food costs RM10 each and Drinks cost RM12 each. For the quality that I received, it was really worth the money!

Tip: If you’re not a coffee lover, they have a good selection of teas and their hot chocolate was superb. The Cold Brew was really refreshing especially for a Saturday afternoon. During peak hours, you might have to wait as the seating is rather small.
